Song of Solomon, Ani Le'Dodi - Miniature scroll
Code: 553
The scroll has been written by a scribe, and illuminated with the theme of "I am my beloved, and my beloved is mine" (Song of Solomon 6:3). The words are set separately in ornaments, following the headers of parshiyot of the Lisbon Bible, the magnificent art work of the Lisbon Judaic Workshop of the 15 century. This is the source also to the areas of floral ornamentation at the top and the bottom of the scroll, and to the use of micrography.
The whole book of Shir Hashirim appears again in micrography, forming the borders to the scroll, and continues in the tiny black micrography.
The birds: first come the Doves, a loving couple, kissing. Then the Seagull, bird of the sea. Third is the Dunnock, delicate singing bird, living in the woods. The Wild Pigeon sits on her eggs, the bright colored Kingfishers scan the waters for prey, and last is Sinay Rosefinch, the desert bird.
Under the columns are the Deer: Deer of Mount Carmel, Deer of the Desert, and the Israeli Deer, all of them natives of this land, as are the birds.
A cutout pattern of leaves completes the illumination.
